Alan Aleksandrowicz, Vice-President of the Port of Gdańsk, joins the Management Board of the Baltic Ports Organisation

The Baltic Ports Conference, the largest annual event organised by the Baltic Ports Organisation, took place in Klaipeda. In 2024, after a hiatus of several years, the Port of Gdańsk once again became a member of the BPO. And Alan Aleksandrowicz, Vice-President of the Port of Gdańsk, joined the Management Board of the organisation as a representative of Polish ports.

This year’s edition of the Baltic Ports Conference is over. The three days were full of events. Four sessions were attended by many experts, who discussed current topics of importance to the port industry in the Baltic Sea region. Speakers tried to predict the future of ports in the context of geopolitics, talking about the prospects for shipping, transport policy, greening and energy transition.

Alan Aleksandrowicz, Vice-President of the Port of Gdańsk, took part in a session on the current state of European transport policy and transport corridors. He participated in the panel discussion ‘From the Aegean to Estonia, the new transport corridor – Baltic Sea – Black Sea – Aegean (BBA) – in the context of the new geopolitical landscape’. The panellists discussed possible scenarios of the time after the end of the war in Ukraine and the accession of Ukraine to the European Union. They pointed out the importance of investing in transport corridors and stressed the need for Baltic ports to reach all of them.

‘Ukraine is going to be a major player and a major transport hub between Europe and Asia’, argued President Aleksandrowicz during the panel.

According to Marina Basso Michael (Port of Hamburg), there is no way Ukraine can return to its condition prior to February 2022 and we all need to focus on rebuilding it and creating a ‘Marshall Plan’ for Ukraine.

The Baltic Ports Organisation is a regional ports organisation that inspires and supports its members and at the same time actively works with relevant partners. It was founded on 10 October 1991 in Copenhagen in order to facilitate partnerships between ports and to monitor and improve shipping opportunities in the Baltic Sea region. The BPO is an organisation registered in Estonia (with its registered office in Tallinn port) and operates in accordance with the Estonian Non-Profit Associations Act.
